A Forecasting Platform Trader Made $436K from Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A new rule put forward on recently aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Industry Context
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
