Last year, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with him to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

• His list included various figures, including an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who researched Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the image of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his “recruitment work” in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder interpretation prompted local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
