Everyday tennis enthusiasts will have the chance to win one million Australian dollars when they take on elite players - featuring leading player the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point before the year's first major

Organizers of the year's first Grand Slam have revealed the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will pit everyday competitors against top-ranked players in a single-elimination format at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Competition Operates

Participants must play 'the classic hand game' to establish who serves or receives, and the player who wins the point will move forward to the subsequent phase

The victor of the event will earn approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who advanced to the final four of the main draw competitions in the last edition won over a million Australian dollars

Past Comparable Tournaments

The New York major hosted a revamped, independent mixed doubles tournament in August which encouraged top singles players to compete, with the champions receiving a million-dollar prize

The year's first major held its first-ever single-point competition in the current season, but the total purse was a smaller amount and it had limited exposure

One top competitor was the sole elite competitor competing, and his campaign came to an end when he put the sole serving chance permitted failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Competition Information

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will function, but it is projected to emulate a similar format to this year's edition

The elite players will be permitted to serve once and the amateurs two times - as is the norm in traditional tennis

While it is not certain how the bracket will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the site will be the primary court rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The concluding rounds will occur in a night session instead of 1pm local time

Entry Requirements

Domestic competitors - or foreign participants who have registered with the governing body - can enter 'quick-match event' events at their neighborhood facilities

The winners of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a draw, with one amateur player from every region and area picked to compete in the 'final competition' in a nighttime event on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a entry tournament in December which everyday players, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and sport stars can participate in

It starts on early January and the two winners will go into Wednesday's 'grand finale' with the other eight amateurs and top-ranked athletes
