Arne Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Defeat
Arne Slot conceded that it's understandable for concerns to be raised about his future following another heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth defeat in twelve matches, marking the team's poorest streak after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I've received a lot of support from management,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to change things and earn three points of course but if you are coaching a team and underperforming then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me every single minute each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular discussions I sense the belief. However I've not talked to them since this match yet so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Player Response
The manager highlighted recurring shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their European defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't need to wait to consider it. I'm beyond being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It's tough because I play for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a period of this nature with results this poor.”
He finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to fight.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
