Blasts and Low-Flying Aircraft Reported in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas

Reports circulated of multiple explosions and the noise of low-flying planes in the Venezuelan capital in the pre-dawn hours of the weekend. The event has led to allegations from the Venezuelan government and demands for diplomatic action.

Venezuela Blames United States of Military Action

Venezuela's incumbent government has blamed the United States of what it calls "imperialist aggression," alleging that former President Donald Trump allegedly directed attacks against the South American state. In an public announcement, the authorities confirmed that attacks had hit the capital and three other states: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"The primary goal of this aggression is to seize control of our nation's natural resources, notably its crude oil and resources," the government said.

The government appealed to the world to condemn the strikes, which it labeled a "blatant breach of international norms" that endangered numerous of lives in peril.

Accounts of Blasts and Military Bases Hit

Residents reported hearing at least multiple explosions around the middle of the night local time. Residents in various neighborhoods allegedly rushed into the streets outside.

"Everything shook. It was frightening. We experienced blasts and jets in the distance," commented one resident.

Black smoke was reported billowing from major army bases in the city: the La Carlota airbase military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where leader Nicolás Maduro is believed to have a residence.

Regional Reaction

The leader of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on X that "At this moment they are striking Caracas... attacking it with missiles." He requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council.

Colombia, which recently became a member of the UNSC, stated it would initiate operational measures at its frontier with Venezuela.

Preceding Events

These alleged strikes are preceded by a extended campaign of pressure by the United States against the Maduro regime. Beginning in last summer, authorities reported a substantial naval deployment off the country's northern coast and a series of air strikes on ships linked to drug trafficking.

Venezuela's administration has announced "the implementation of emergency" and commanded all defense plans to be implemented. It has also called on its citizens to take to the streets and "repudiate this imperialist attack."

The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately addressed requests for a statement regarding the reports.
