The British tennis star secured the biggest win of his career by rallying from a lost first set to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win signifies Norrie's maiden success over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the fifth British man in the record books to beat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the most significant success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the most in-form athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight elite tournament victories, which represented the best series of performances in the young champion's early career.

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly to success in the beginning as he eased through the opening set. Nevertheless, the British contender steadily battled back into contention by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, grueling points. His persistent shot tolerance and consistency steadily made an impact.

For much of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old seemed notably uncomfortable hitting his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this season, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors.
