From Struggling to Imperfect – Is There Any Team Actively Seeking to Secure the Big Game This Season?
No league sells competitive balance as effectively as the NFL: it’s the entire brand. But through ten games of this season, this doesn't represent a landscape with perfect equilibrium between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Instead, it's a scenario where the bulk of franchises is simply sufficient.
Clear Picture in NFC
Within the National Football Conference, to some degree, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) look like the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and secured blowout wins on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles even with their challenges maintain a deeply skilled squad throughout football, likewise with Green Bay (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3 standing), despite their uneven performances along both lines of scrimmage while managing tension on their coaching staff, have demonstrated they can hammer good teams. For each of these squads, it's straightforward to put together a Super Bowl path.
AFC Playoff Chaos
Over in the AFC, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (five wins, four losses). Take another look. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The traditional powers, featuring elite NFL signal-callers, have either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.
Competitive Balance System
From certain perspectives, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching the current division frontrunners in the AFC still feels strange. Components of every squad suggest title potential, yet not completely. If you were asked to commit to your conference championship predictions at this moment, would you confidently choose any among the four division leaders?
Team Breakdowns
Indianapolis Colts
First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have caused alarm. He has returned to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He took seven sacks facing Atlanta during Sunday's contest, and endured a brief period during which he tossed an intercepted pass and lost three fumbles. This follows he committed turnovers five separate times facing the Steelers.
The Colts attack performed well initially since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line make the Colts good enough to survive some negative plays, as demonstrated overseas. However, if Jones reverts to his previous error-filled form would terminate championship hopes.
New England Patriots
The Patriots feel fairly alike. Last season, they were league laughingstocks. Now, they’re the league’s happiest surprise and the hottest team across the league after seven straight wins. If not for losing due to fumbles a winnable game versus the Steelers, they would currently hold at 9–1 as the league's best. Previously, they were old and slow. Currently they're inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've encountered the easiest slate across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. The signal-caller has been brought down 35 times – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he endured during the game proved brutal. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.
Denver Broncos
Denver stands at eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, while the defensive unit provides the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering within their division with seven wins, yet medical problems affecting their protection unit will make it tough to mount a deep postseason tilt.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Then we have the Steelers, somehow still leading their division notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions at this stage of his career continue to show up. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and the schedule softening, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. Considering the Ravens opened losing five of six and still look like likely to claim the title is telling about the complete conference.
Traditional Powers
The Ravens' form part among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who could still create the most fear for opponents should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.
Buffalo Analysis
Last week, Buffalo was celebrating post Chiefs triumph. During Sunday's action they experienced among the season's worst defeats during the campaign. They didn’t just lose to the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, dropping a 30-13 road game. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in several seasons.
