Greenlandic Women Achieve Legal Triumph in Battle with the Danish State over Forced IUD Scandal.

Survivors from a historical campaign where thousands of Greenlandic females, some minors reportedly were covertly implanted using contraceptive coils absent informed permission are declaring a win in their court battle with Copenhagen.

Officials have announced that they are now eligible for compensation from a settlement fund.

Government Settlement Reached

Folketinget, and state authorities, finalized a deal that entitles approximately four thousand five hundred affected individuals to claim 300,000 DKK (£35,000) per person.

The decision comes after a lengthy battle led by 143 women who initiated legal proceedings demanding compensation over the trauma and distress they experienced, arguing it constituted a violation of fundamental human rights.

Historical Context

Denmark administered the territory as a colony until 1953 maintaining authority over its healthcare system into the late 20th century.

Earlier this year, after years of failing to address the violations, Denmark issued a formal expression of regret. The country's leader expressed sorrow for the “institutional prejudice” targeting Greenlandic females within the Danish healthcare system.

“It has had significant impacts for the affected women who have experienced both physical and mental trauma,” said a senior official.

Compensation Process Details

Authorities clarified that women who were given the procedure covertly during a thirty-one year period would be able to seek compensation starting next year. Relevant legislation will come into force by mid-year.

Based on the findings of an independent investigation into medical procedures from that era, an estimated four and a half thousand women may be eligible for compensation.

For eligibility, applicants will need to:

• Provide a “plausible account” of the incident.
• Have lived in Greenland throughout the specified timeframe.
• State under oath that they possessed no knowledge or consent for it to occur.

Voices of Survivors

One of the women, recalling being fourteen when she was instructed to report to the hospital without explanation, said it as feeling a violation.

“Our activism publicly and interviewees proved successful,” she said. “We started in 2022 and now a relatively short time we got an apology plus financial acknowledgment.”

A different perspective shared happiness, stating, “We are happy. As my mother put it: we won.” Although there is a view the amount should have been higher, there is contentment regarding the acknowledgment of past events.

Official Responses

A Greenlandic official called the settlement being “long overdue”. She emphasized, “It is not primarily financial. It is about recognition of the hurt and its profound implications.”

A Danish cabinet member acknowledged these events represent a “troubling period within the shared history”, noting that compensation “will not erase the suffering for survivors” yet it “serves to recognize and express regret over what they endured.”
