Israeli citizens mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
People have assembled throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The official said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future administration of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place appears as home now and until every captive return none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population want the war to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and locality districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"When the evening comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff reported.
