Six quirky but doughty youngsters encounter the trail of a colossal and terrible paranormal evil that has infiltrated our existence from the farthest reaches of oblivion. They are compelled to devote their lives fighting it, facing one nightmare after another in the struggle.

A Familiar Storyline with a New Spin

This is the plot, roughly, of the master of horror’s seminal work It (a standout in his career; undeniable). It similarly frames of the celebrated author’s heir Joseph Hillstrom King’s latest chilling tome, in which six friends summon the ancient, deeply sinister beast the Sorrowful Monarch from the Long Dark to aid them in overcoming some villains. Unsurprisingly, their otherworldly invocation goes awry.

Embracing a Literary Legacy

The author began his writing journey going to great lengths to avoid any connection from his well-known dad, using the pseudonym he still uses today and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his dad). However, in his newest work, he embraces it. Several quotes that deliberately echo some of the senior author’s well-known (that classic opening line); a moment that brings to mind a King plot point (a game of puzzles). Throughout this massive book, the author rejoices in his lineage, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Main Characters

Focusing on the companions: most are pupils at the made-up this academic setting in this northeastern locale. First is Arthur, studious and brilliant, solving ancient puzzles in his free moments; Colin, rich, sharp, and inclined to bulldoze obstacles in his path; the twin siblings; the beautiful the lovely Allie. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but becomes a key part of their group as they dabble, partly convinced, half not, in supernatural practices.

The Pivotal Ritual

Our hero becomes, for reasons we don’t need to go into, forced into stealing rare books from his cherished academic collection by a bunch of local criminals. This tears at his bookish heart, especially when he’s forced to acquire the institution’s prized and chilling work: the logbook of occultist the historical figure (condemned “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the binding is fashioned from his hide). These young investigators examine the log, realize they are able to call forth what the author references as a “proud worm to assist Arthur with his coercion issue – and occupy the subsequent narrative enduring the repercussions. This ancient entity will undoubtedly remove those troublesome local drug dealers, but they are required to pick a fresh offering annually or fall prey to the beast. In the character’s own words: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is more dragons.”

Stylistic Versatility and Imaginative Range

Covering a generation, Hill also moves with effortless ease across narrative styles: as the companions attempt to deal with the circumstances they find themselves in by, variously, picking people who are obviously evil to sacrifice, or searching for methods to kill the dragon themselves, we move between thriller to grim fantasy, clandestine torment to love story to terror. A standout transition was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface below Cornwall, a section sprinkled with JRR Tolkien that was gloriously terrifying.

A Rich Tapestry of Dread and Courage

The novel features trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and internet antagonists, properly scary and perfectly brought to life. The story includes mystic weapons and treacheries, heart-stopping scenes of valor and scenes of terrible wickedness, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a frightening tale that is above all a tribute to the imagination, and to love and friendship. “We needed a story to believe and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the companions assemble around a surface, preparing to summon their serpent into existence with the power of their thoughts.

According to Joe Hill in his opening statement: “Here be dragons”. Do not overlook this.
