Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
