New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
