The Hit Drama Confirmed for 7th Season on BBC
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
