The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
