This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
